Did you have any idea when you are watching a football game that the National Football League (NFL) is a tax-exempt non-profit?
But, wait, how can that be, you ask? Because they have taken full advantage of the law where the NFL league office is considered a trade association in support of its clubs. This means the league office is responsible for things like writing the rules of the game, hiring referees and negotiating collecting bargaining agreements.
Each NFL team, however, is a for-profit business. The average ticket price for an NFL game is $85 and the average price of Super Bowl ticket is $3,715. The teams pay taxes on all of the ticket and jersey sales, for example.
The fact remains, however, that the tax-paying public is subsidizing the league office, and yet the NFL is considered the most valuable sports league in the world. To put that into some perspective, over 700 million people watched the soccer world cup around the world and over 111 million watched the Super Bowl, yet the NFL outpaces any other league in the world in terms of total revenue.
So, why is it that the NFL is still able to rely on what it has been doing since the 1940's and is able to receive the largesse of the public when its only real mission and reason for being is to make money for the league, players and owners?
To be fair, the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) and National Hockey League (NHL) are also tax-exempt trade associations, but they earn substantially less than the business of the NFL. Major League Baseball (MLB) gave up its tax-exempt status in 2007 and the National Basketball Association (NBA) has always operated as a for-profit business.
Don't get me wrong, I love football, but tax-exempt status has to end. Non-profit status is something that should really be left to organizations that are out there trying to improve the lives of people. We should not be providing non-profit status, and hence subsidizing the league office, to a powerhouse like the NFL. Again, its only true mission is to make loads and loads of money. Let's not pretend it's something that would lead to the betterment of society and its people.
To that end, two senators have proposed bills that would change the NFL's non-profit status. Senator Cory Booker has drafted legislation that would end non-profit status for all major sports leagues. In addition, Senator Booker would divert the monies that go to subsidize organizations such as the NFL instead to efforts toward ending domestic violence. Senator Maria Cantwell has proposed legislation, targeted toward the NFL specifically, to end its non-profit status due to its refusal to force the Washington Redskins to change its racially offensive name.
Fans of the game need to get behind legislative efforts, as does the general public. We all need to lend our voices to ensure that non-profit tax-exempt status is given to organizations that deserve this IRS tax designation in our society.
I don't have a problem supporting tax-exempt status for organizations such as Charity: Water, Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders or The Salvation Army, but it's time to end the NFL's cushy ride at taxpayer expense.
